Gabapentin is often prescribed to treat dogs and cats that are suffering from chronic pain related to cancer, arthritis, degenerative joint disease, allodynia, surgery, and hyperalgesia. It is an inhibitory neurotransmitter known to affect calcium channels in the nervous system, which can lessen the amount of pain perceived by your dog or cat.
When used for seizure control, Gabapentin has anticonvulsant properties making it beneficial for dogs with refractory seizures. It is also used for sedation when traveling or grooming, idiopathic epilepsy, and relief from anxiety. In cats it has been beneficial to treat anxiety related to travel, veterinary visits and examinations.
There are many factors that can cause pain in animals and Gabapentin could be a very useful medication to help treat it. Known to be safe with few side effects, it is made in liquid format for easy delivery to your pet by mouth. Gabapentin has improved the quality of life in dogs with chronic pain conditions and ExpressVet makes it easy and more affordable to help your pet feel good.

If your pet does not feel well or vomits after taking the medication on an empty stomach, try giving it to them with a treat or food. We always recommend consulting with your pet veterinarian before taking.

Possible Side Effects

Gabapentin is safe for dogs. Side effects can include ataxia (abnormal coordination and movement), mild sedation, and occasional diarrhea. Your veterinarian may start you off on a lower dose and slowly increase it to avoid side effects.
Possible allergic reactions are swelling, itching, hives, or difficulty breathing. If any of the side effects or allergic reactions continue or get worse, contact your pet’s veterinarian right away.
When taking Gabapentin for seizures it is best to slowly wean off the drugs to avoid the risk for seizure withdrawal.

Drug & Food Interactions

If your pet is on any of the following medications you should use Gabapentin with caution:

  • Antacids - Avoid giving an antacid to your pet 2 hours before or after taking Gabapentin, it can increase the risk of sedation and make it harder to absorb Gabapentin making it less effective.
  • Buprenorphine - When combined can result in increased risk of sedation.
  • Cannabidiol - When combined can result in increased risk of sedation.
  • Hydroxyzine - When combined can result in increased risk of sedation.
  • Minocycline - When combined can result in increased risk of sedation.
  • Mirtazapine - When combined can result in increased risk of sedation.
  • Opioid Analgesics - When combined can cause increased risk of sedation and side effects.

We recommend telling your veterinarian about any medications, supplements, vitamins or herbal pills that your pet is taking.

Pets that are allergic to Gabapentin should not take this medication. It is not recommended for animals that have kidney disease, are pregnant, nursing, or lactating. If your pet has epilepsy do not stop this medication suddenly since it can cause withdrawal seizures.

Active Ingredients

Gabapentin

Instructions

Gabapentin is given to your pet by mouth with or without food. If your pet does not feel well taking it on an empty stomach or vomits, then try giving future doses to them with a meal. The best time to give your pet this medication is before food.

Storage Instructions

Gabapentin Compounded Oral Liquid should be stored at room temperature.

Doses

Gabapentin should be given orally to your pet, every 8 or 12 hours, as prescribed by your veterinarian. Once your pet builds a tolerance level to the medication your veterinarian may decide to increase the daily dosage. When used as chronic medication the typical pet should need Gabapentin for approximately 6 months or longer. The exact dosage will be prescribed by your veterinarian.

What if I miss giving my pet a dose? If you miss a dose, give the next dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the following dose, then continue with the next scheduled one and skip the missed dose. Do not give a double dose to catch up or make up for a missed dose.

Additional help for my dog's arthritis pain.

I'm starting Yoda on his second bottle of gabapentin. Giving him liquid meds is a struggle (he bites - hard). But the change in his mobility is noticeable. I'll keep giving him gabapentin to keep him bopping along. Good medication; glad it's a liquid, because there is no way will he take a pill! Thank you!

Compounded Gabapentin

Kaci loves ALL the flavors so far. She gets a few drops every A.M. and P.M. with her food to help her manage her idopathic seizures. We also use the dissolve tabs occasionally away from home or while traveling. The dissolve tabs seem much stronger and we notice her sedation more. With the compounded drops we can easily control her dosage so she doesn't show signs of heavy sedation unless needed for travel, fireworks, thunderstorms, "scary" visitors etc. It also seems to help her recover from any aches and pains after long walks.

Excellent service and price

My interactions with EXPRESS VET are excellent. After finding them online, I made contact, told them what I needed, put them in contact with my vet and just the minimum number of days later I had my pup’s meds via express mail. It was a pleasant surprise to have such rapid and correct service. I am grateful and will continue to use Express Vet.
