Meclizine Hydrochloride (generic for Dramamine®, Bonine®, Univert®) is a piperazine antihistamine labeled for use in humans. In addition to its antihistamine activity, it has antiemetic, CNS depressant, antispasmodic, and local anesthetic effects.  It is use extra-label in dogs, cats and other small animals primarily in the treatment of vertigo / motion sickness.

Formulations

Meclizine Tablets are supplied as 12.5 mg and 25 mg tablets in 100 ct blister packs.

Administration

Use as directed by your veterinarian.

Commonly Recommended Doses:

DOGS - 4 mg/kg orally once daily.

CATS - 6.25 – 12.5 mg per cat orally once daily.

RABBITS, RODENTS, SMALL MAMMALS - 2 – 12 mg/kg orally once daily.

Precautions

Contraindications / Precautions / Warnings

Meclizine is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to it. It should be used with caution in patients with prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction, severe cardiac failure, angle-closure glaucoma, or pyeloduodenal obstruction.

Adverse Effects

The usual adverse effect noted with meclizine is sedation; less frequently anticholinergic effects may be noted (dry mucous membranes, eyes, tachycardia, etc.). Contradictory CNS stimulation has also been reported. Cats may develop inappetence while receiving this medication.

Drug Interactions

The following drug interactions have either been reported or are theoretical in humans or animals receiving meclizine and may be of significance in veterinary patients. Unless otherwise noted, use together is not necessarily contraindicated, but weigh the potential risks and perform additional monitoring when appropriate.

  • CNS DEPRESSANTS: Use with other CNS depressants may cause additive sedation.
  • ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS: Other anticholinergic drugs may cause additive anticholinergic effects.

Directions

  • Dosage should be taken one hour before travel starts.
  • Adults and children 12 years of age and older: take 2-4 caplets once daily, or as directed by a doctor
  • Children under 12 years: do not give this product to children under 12 years of age unless directed by a doctor
