Fluoxetine (generic for Prozac) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant FDA-approved for use in dogs and used extra-label in cats for a variety of behavior disorders. May be beneficial for the treatment of aggression, stereotypic behaviors (and other obsessive-compulsive behaviors) and anxiety in dogs and cats.
This medication requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
Fluoxetine is a highly selective inhibitor of the reuptake of serotonin in the CNS. Fluoxetine apparently has little effect on other neurotransmitters (eg, dopamine, norepinephrine). In dogs and cats, fluoxetine has anxiolytic and anticompulsive effects and may also reduce aggressive behaviors.
Use as directed by your veterinarian.
Should not be used in dogs with epilepsy or a history of seizures and it should not be given with drugs that lower the seizure threshold (eg, acepromazine, chlorpromazine).
Fluoxetine should be used with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, as it may alter blood glucose levels. Dosages may need to be reduced in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
