Uses

Aluminum hydroxide compounded capsules when given to dogs or cats to lower phosphorus in the blood, is usually given immediately before feeding or mixed in with food. Pets that suffer from constipation or have gastrointestinal obstruction should be examined or given this medication with caution. Aluminum hydroxide is considered safe and should last 24 hours.
There are no specific precautions for people handling oral medication, however, it is recommended to wash hands after touching any form of medication. We always recommend consulting with your pet veterinarian with any questions or concerns.

Possible Side Effects

This medication is considered to be safe and is usually endured without side effects. Some common side effects can include constipation, hypophosphatemia, or low blood phosphate levels if the dose is too low or too high. In rare occasions if your pet has severe kidney problems, aluminum toxicity can occur with prolonged use.
For some pets using this medication long term it can cause weakness, difficulty walking or behavior changes. If this happens, contact your veterinarian right away. It is best to always consult with your veterinarian if any side effects persist or get worse.

Drug & Food Interactions

Aluminum hydroxide can prevent the absorption or effect of some drugs that your pet might be taking such as:
Allopurinol, Aspirin, Azole Antifungals, Cefpodoxime, Corticosteroids, Digoxin, Ethambutol, Fexofenadine, Fluoroquinolones, Gabapentin, H2 Antagonists, Iron Salts, Isoniazid, Penicillamine, Phenothiazines, Phenytoin, Sotalol, Tetracyclines, and Thyroid Hormones.

Additional monitoring is needed with:

  • Diazepam - Used together aluminum may increase diazepam absorption.
  • Quinidine - When combined can increase the absorption of quinidine.
  • Vitamin D Analogs - Avoid combination as it may increase aluminum absorption.

To offset the interaction and make sure all drugs are absorbed appropriately, give Aluminum hydroxide 2 hours before or after any other medication. It’s best to consult with your veterinarian and be sure to inform them of all medications, vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies that you give your animal.

Precautions

Aluminum hydroxide should not be used for pets with very low phosphorus in their blood. This medication should be used with caution in pets that have chronic constipation. We recommend talking to your veterinarian about the potential risks if your pet has any of these signs or conditions.
